Pokémon GO has finally launched in Japan. In recent news, Japan is asking Niantic (the creators of the app) to remove the Fukushima disaster zone from having Pokémon spawn there.

For two weeks after it’s initial launch, it wasn’t available in Japan, however if you had your phone’s language preferences set to Japanese, you can play the Japanese version. If you’re a Pokémon GO player, and you study Japanese, there is no excuse for playing the English version! If you haven’t played it yet, but do study Japanese, this might be a good excuse to try it out. As of writing this there have been over 75 million downloads, it’s officially become a cultural phenomenon.

This post will go over the Japanese used in the game, and you can even study the list on Skritter to catch all the vocabulary. (Blog post on lame puns in the future…)

The list will cover all the vocabulary used regardless of frequency, but to try to keep this post as short as it can be, I won’t cover basic words or grammar like わたし or です. Also, any words that are defined earlier in the post and then used again later won’t be reiterated.

After signing in with your Google account (or Pokemon Trainer Club account), you’ll be brought to the loading screen which will ask you if it’s okay that Pokémon GO has access to notifications. Click OK to move on, or 許可しない if you don’t want the notices.

After accepting or denying notifications, there will be a message alerting you to not be a complete zombie and to pay attention to your surroundings. (For instance, don’t be oblivious and walk into oncoming traffic). Click OK if you’re up to the task.

After the professor’s introduction, you select what you want your character to look like, confirm it by (pressing はい), and then confirm that Pokemon GO can use your camera (by pressing OK). At this point the professor will start talking again.

Three Pokemon will pop up near you, pick which one you want by tapping on it. Once you do, a screen will pop up letting you know you can use your camera for the background, or the cartoonish background that doesn’t use your camera. Confirm that you would like to try to camera feature by pressing はい, or if you don’t want to try it out, press あとで試す.
