In this post, we are celebrating fathers through the medium of song, with 6 Mandarin Chinese songs picked just for you. We have also made a special flashcard deck on Skritter which includes the embedded YouTube song and some key-words from the songs.
(Note that YouTube sometimes doesn’t allow embedding music videos outside of their main site, so you need to click the title of the video to watch it on YouTube.com)
Father’s Day is traditionally celebrated on June 18th in the US, UK, and elsewhere. However, in Taiwan, Father’s Day is widely observed on 8 August, the eighth day of the eighth month of the year. In Mandarin Chinese, the pronunciation of the number eight is bā, and the pronunciation is very similar to the character 爸 (bà), which means “dad”. Therefore, it’s known as “Bābā Holiday”(爸爸節 ba4bajie2) or the more formal “Father’s Day” (父親節 fu4qin1jie2).
