Kentaro Monogatari: ケンタロウの物語

Japan is a land full of folktales and fairy tales, called 物語 or monogatari. Some of them are quite common and almost everyday references, whether it be an Okappa (a mythical water creature) printed on a warning sign for a body of water, or a giant statue of Momotaro (a story of a boy who was born from a peach, then takes kibi-dango ricecakes on his journey to slay a demon, while meeting animal friends along the way who want to help– in exchange for some kibi-dango of course).

Here is a monogatari I wrote called “Kentaro”, which is a play on words of ケンタウロス, a centaur, and 太郎 （たろう）, a male given name also used in various monogatari, like momotaro or kintaro.

Kentaro Monogatari: ケンタロウの物語

昔々、ある遠い魔法の森に、ケンタウロスの一族が他の様々な不思議な生き物と一緒に暮らしていました。 ケンタロウスの一族には森の王様の伝言を森の生き物に伝える義務がありました。 彼らは王様の使者でした。 ある日、一族の一番心優しくて年取ったお爺さんは伝言を伝えていた途中で、どこからか遥かにかすかな赤ん坊のような泣き声を聞きました。 お爺さんが自分の周囲を見回すと、葉っぱの塊がザワザワしているのに気づきました。 そこを探してみると、驚いたことには、三本足のケンタウロスの赤ちゃんを見つけました。 赤ちゃんが弱いていてその上空腹なようでした。 もちろん心優しいお爺さんは赤ちゃんを家に連れて帰って、我が子のように育て、「ケンタロウ」という名前を名づけました。 数年が経ちました。 ケンタロウくんは、森の王様のための伝言を伝えることができるほどの年齢になりました。 三本足でしたけど、よく歩けました。 しかし走ることがぜんぜんできませんでした。 王様の伝言は高速で伝えることが必要ですので、三本の足で足りませんでした。 王様は皆に尊敬されているのに、思いやりがある王様ではありませんでした。 もし森の生き物が義務を果たさなかったら、すぐにお城の牢屋に閉じ込めました。 お爺さんはケンタロウくんが十分な速さで伝言を伝えられないことをよく知っていました。 だから来る夜も来る夜も、彼の為にどうしたら良いかを考えました。 ある夜のことです。 お爺さんは必死になって考えていた時、窓の外に小さな淡い光がピカピカと輝き、窓へ近づいて来て、ますます大きくなりました。 光が窓へ浮き上がって入っていて、部屋の床で留まりました。 お爺さんは驚いて見つめました。 突然、光は妖精の形になりました。 妖精はこう言いました。 あなたの思いと祈りは皆の森の生き物たちより大きく聞こえます。 あなたの絶望は、妖精たちによく聞こえましたよ。 私たちは、森の一番優しくて年取ったケンタウロスのお爺さん、あなたの願いを叶えることにしました。 そうして、妖精が元の光の形に戻り、窓から出て遠くへ行ってしまいました。 お爺さんは驚きながらも、眠っているケンタロウくんの部屋に駆け込みました。 掛け布団を取りました。 彼は自分の目を信じることが出来ませんでした。 ケンタロウくんの背中には、ふさふさな羽で覆われた２つの翼がついていました。

さて、王様のための伝言を伝える日がとうとう着きました。 ケンタロウくんは森一番の使者になりました。 空に舞い上り、すごい速さで伝言を伝えることが出来ました。 結局、ケンタロウくんはお嫁さんを見つけ、翼がある子どもをたくさん生みました。 何年もたち。 その子どもたちも大人になり、妻と夫をそれぞれ見つけ、翼がある子どもを生みました。 そして、ペガサスと言う生き物の類が生まれました。 おしまい。

English version:

A long time ago in a distant magical forest, a tribe of centaur lived with other various mystical creatures. The centaur tribe’s duty was to deliver messages to the other creatures of the forest for the Forest King. They were the king’s personal messengers.
One day, while the tribe’s most aged and kindhearted old man was delivering a message, he heard a baby-like crying coming from somewhere faintly in the distance. He looked around and noticed rustling in a pile of leaves.
He looked around in the pile, and to his surprise discovered a three legged baby centaur boy. The boy looked weak and hungry. Naturally being the kindhearted old man that he was, he took the boy back home with him, named him “Kentaro”, and raised him as his own child.
A number of years passed.
Kentaro became the age of which he would need to deliver messages for the Forest King. Although he only had three legs, he could walk quite well. However, he could not run at all. Because the king’s messages needed to delivered with great speed, three legs were not enough.
Although the king was respected by all, he was not an understanding one. If any of the forest creatures did not fulfill their duties, the king would imprison them in the castle’s dungeon at once. The old man knew that Kentaro did not have the speed required, and so he spent countless nights pondering what to do for the boy.
One of those nights while he was desperately contemplating, a small faint orb of light from outside the window was glowing, it grew bigger and bigger and appeared to be approaching his window. The light floated up into the window and lied motionless on the floor. The old man stared in astonishment. Suddenly the light turned into a figure of a Fairy, who began to speak.
“Your thoughts and prayers are louder than all the other forest creatures. The fairies have heard your despair. Our decision is to grant your wish to you, the kindest and oldest centaur. ”
With those words the fairy returned back into the orb of light and drifted out of the window into the distance. The old man was still very startled, and rushed into the room of Kentaro who was sleeping. He pulled back the covers and could not believe his eyes. On Kentaro’s back were two abundantly feathered pair of wings.
Well– the day finally arrived that Kentaro would need to deliver messages for the king.
He became the best messenger in the forest. He would soar through the sky and deliver the messages with great speed.
In the end, Kentaro met his wife and had many winged children together. Many years passed and their kids became adults, who each respectively met their own husbands and wives and had many winged children of their own.
And so, the race of creature called the “pegasus” was born.
