We built this a while ago, but haven’t gotten around to featuring it until now. This is a really cool feature because it allows you to see which words a character is used in, helping you get a better sense of how it’s used, whether it’s important, and where its meanings come from. To check it out, click the magnifying glass in the prompt, or on any single character throughout the rest of the site.
I’ve been adding a bunch of common characters by themselves from the Most Common Characters lists, but they come without context. Now I can just open up the word popup when I see one and add useful words that use them, to help reinforce things. You get to see up to four words using the character, in order of toughness. This toughness ranking is partially based on standard usage frequency and partially based on how hard it is to learn the word and how important it is in textbooks for learners.
It also makes it easy to get lost in a deep stack of words, as there’s a lot of interesting characters in each interesting word. Fun times! Just remember to return to the surface and do some practicing every once in a while.
